Professional accountancy firms are subject to price pressures. The 2016 IFAC Global SMP Survey showed that pressure to lower fees is the third highest challenge facing SMPs (see Transforming Challenges into Opportunities: Fee Pressure). Clients always seek “better prices”, even when they could be deeply interested in the services offered.

Recently ending in Barcelona, the Mobile World Congress had over 100,000 visitors from 208 countries sharing the latest advances in technology and communications. The most outstanding aspect was certainly the changes in consumer articles, with new features in mobiles or in connected vehicles. Apart from this, many other developments will have a highly significant impact: changes in basic technology, advances in 5G communications, the possibilities of big data, the Internet of things…each edition of the “Mobile Congress” introduces increasingly significant advances.

The International Federation of Accountants® (IFAC®) has once again released the results of its global annual survey of accountants from small- and medium-sized practices (SMPs), only this time around, there were even more respondents. Over 6,700 from some 169 countries responded, 32% more than last year, making this perhaps the largest such survey of accountants working in practice. The number of respondents to the survey is a clear signal that SMPs are acutely aware of the significant role they play in business and society; and the results signal that the profession needs to be alert to the many opportunities and threats they face right now and in the future.
